Understand

Dali is divided into the Old Town and New Town (Xiaguan).

Get in

Bus from Kunming bus station costs 67Y (~6.7? & 6Hrs.), and will bring you to Dali new town. Check with the driver if he stops at Dali oldtown or Xiaguan. From there you must take the local No.8 bus (1Y ~ 0.1Euro &20min) to Old Dali. Buses coming south from Lijiang stop outside the old town, from where it is possible to get a taxi to the main guesthouses.

Get around

The old town is small enough to get around on foot, and being laid out in a grid format is relatively easy to navigate. The major landmarks are the gates and Xi Jie (Westerner's Street), lined with cafés and tourist tack shops).

See

• Butterfly Spring (http://www.yunnantourism.net/scenicspots/sight_index.asp?sight_id=CN-01-02-03), a shallow pool that periodically swarm with countless butterflies.
• Erhai Lake
• Cangshan Mountains
• The Three Pagodas, which overlook Erhai lake with a dramatic mountain backdrop.

Eat

In Old town western food is widely available and cheap. For a traditional meal catering for 4 people along with beer expect to pay 50Y.

Drink

500ml bottle of Dali beer will cost you 4Y (0.4Euro). A large selection of beer is on offer but some are coloured green and require an acquired taste. But for the price, there is no excuse but to sample the lot.

Sleep

Lots of accommodation to chose from. Expect to pay 15-25Y (1.5-2Euro) for hostel type accommodation and 20-40Y (2-4Euro) for a double room with private shower and toilet.

Get out

Most of the hostels and travel agents can organise bus tickets anywhere in Yunnan. They can also arrange flights farther afield.
