Understand

Attractions include mountains much like those at Guilin, temples and other historic buildings, and raft rides down a sensational river canyon. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History

Various court officials, poets and scholars have lived here. It was a famous retreat for such folk.

There are trains, overnight from Xiamen and several hours from Fuzhou.

Wu Yi Mountain has an airport with regular flights to major Chinese cities.

Fees/Permits

Many attractions have a fee. You can buy a pass for 100-odd RMB that gets you into all of them

To get into the main body of the park costs 110RMB for 1 day, 120RMB for 2 days and 130 RMB for 3 days. Beware, lots of the other attractions charge their own fee, so make the most of the main ticket is my recommendation.

Get around

See

Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe) - this magical and enchanted valley produces the best tea in Wu Yi Shan and is the most tranquil and beautiful place I have ever visited. This is an absolute must.

Do

Take the river cruise. Landscape is sensational.

To get around cheaply try Fu Jing Chen, a friendly and knowledgable guy who will whisk you to all the best destinations for a very cheap 90-100RMB a day. Without him, we'd have struggled to see as much as we did. His Tel. No. is 13950609769. he will also find you the best deals in restaurants and foot massage joints!

Buy

The area is also famous for tea. On one occasion, tea from Wu Yi Mountain fetched over $1000 US a gram at an auction in Shanghai.

Eat

Try the tea eggs. These are eggs hardboiled in tea, a nice cheap snack found anywhere in China. At Wu Yi Mountain, they are particularly good.

DON'T eat the pheasant! It's charged by the pound and is extremely expensive! Restaurants in Wu Yi Shan are terribly expensive and the choice is limited. They even serve bear, which you will see proudly displayed with hair still attached, in front of the restaurants. YUK!
