Many of the country pages on Wikitravel contain information originally imported from the CIA World Factbook 2002 (http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/). There are various advantages and disadvantages to having these here -- see CIA World Factbook 2002 import for some details.

When country articles are attracting attention, and get some interesting info on them, we should reformat the article and remove as much of the Factbook stuff as possible. This article describes, step-by-step, how to take out the Factbook info in a systematic way. Yes, it's a bit complicated; suggestions on how to improve the process are welcome.

  1. Copy the original version of the country article -- the original, uned CIA Factbook import -- to a page called "Talk:name of country/CIA World Factbook 2002 import". For example, see Talk:Spain/CIA World Factbook 2002 import . You can get the original version using the page history.
  2. Make a note on the talk page for the country article saying you've done this. Make a link to the factbook import talk page for reference purposes -- you just may need to know which province has the highest male-to-female population, after all.
  3. the country article, and strip out the factbook info. It's usually under the (defunct) "Know" section. Avoid deleting anything added since the original import, especially stuff matching the country article template. Leave in the quick facts box.
  4. If they're not there already, copy in the headers from the country article template (you can also just copy over the template, and strip out the italicized instructions text).
  5. Add an intro after the quick facts box, but before the Regions (if they're there), if there isn't one already. Just saying that X is a country on Y continent is good enough for a start, but if you know more, add it.

There you go! We're on our way to a real country article.
