Houston

Currently we have Houston & Houston (Texas). Since this one meets the "most-famous" rule I tried manually copying the contents of Houston (Texas) into Houston, but that failed. RDF/Turtle stuff

You got it right on Chattanooga; I unfortunately started mixing up MediaWiki templates and RDF syntax in the same posting, which in retrospect was probably pretty confusing. Maybe the best thing is to use a template for this particular task; let's start with Template:isIn, and we can fix it up later, eh? Oh, absolutely! That's the whole point of this exercise. Using RDF means we can define all kinds of machine-readable properties and relationships on articles, images, places, people, and things. Some other things I've thought of:

License info. Adding multi-licensing information using "cc:licence".
Noting that a Wikitravel article is derived from another article on the Web (like the CIA Factbook, say) and information about who wrote it.
Listing related articles; articles about similar places, linking destinations with the phrasebook for the language spoken there, linking itineraries to a destination guide
Article status, as you pointed out
GPS information.

I see three main steps to making any of these initiatives work: 1) find a vocabulary for describing the relationship, 2) adding the statements to articles, and 3) building a user interface to view or query the statements. Probably a 1.5 would be "create MediaWiki template to express the relationship", but I'm not sure that's always going to be the case.

"Usable" vs. "Guide"

I noticed that you've been starting to get the statuses ("stati"??) updated for some of the US state pages, and was intrigued that you consider both the embryonic New Mexico page and the densely populated Hawaii page to be in the "Usable" class, even though there's a vast difference in content between the two. (I'm getting to the NM page -- patience, patience.) What is HI missing that keeps it from being a Guide in your opinion? And why is NM more than an Outline? Case studies might be useful as the transition to status reports continues; I, for one, would like to hear your reasoning. -- Bill-on-the-Hill 15:21, 20 Nov 2005 (EST)

I'm afraid you're probably going to be disappointed. B-) First, although we've got a fuzzy-but-usable set of definitions for the different statuses for city articles, the extension to region, country, phrasebook, itinerary, and travel topic articles is not really clear. So, I think it's going to take some time. Second, if there are 6000 articles divided into 5 status groups, that means there's going to be a lot of variation within each. Third, in doing these status assignments I've tried to use at least the spirit of the statuses. So if you could use a region article as a real guide, then I've been marking it "usable". Fourthly, I haven't been consistent and I think there's going to be a lot of work still to do. Fifth, I was more interested in doing the hierarchy templating rather than status marking, so I wasn't fully concentrating. Sixth: you're right, the NM page wasn't usable, and I've shifted it back down to "outline". Hope that helps. --Evan 18:06, 20 Nov 2005 (EST)

Well, that's a good comprehensive answer. :-) You make a good point about different standards for different types of articles, and I think it's an issue even within "cities" as a class. An incredibly comprehensive guide to Frozen Gopher, Minnesota may take less space than a bare-bones outline for Paris, and it's a high-quality guide we're after here, rather than a judgement of what places provide a high-quality experience (right?). Some discussion of standards probably needs to occur, but that's a work in progress.

Incidentally, I'm starting to populate the New Mexico entry, now that the articles on pieces of the state (at least the ones I know something about) are approaching maturity. You might poke your head back in on it every now and then, although I still have several days' work to do. Pseudo mirror reads data directly from wikitravel.org

There is a pseudo mirror ( http://www.wikide.info/ , 66.225.237.74) of de: that does neither attribute authors nor gives crs or links to wikitravel.org in any way. The worst is that it does not actualy mirror, but drawns the data directly from wikitravel.org and shows them as its own contence. So it uses your resources. I have written them a mail, but I'm not sure if they understand German since the domain is registered in Turkey. Maybe, you should block this server from reading wikitravel.org by a filter rule. I checked their version of Cincinnati since I had tried several months back to translate the English version I had been working on to German and realized that everything seems to be ripped off from the German site. My evidence of this is the Maisonette restaurant, which, in statistical term was the best restaurant in the world. In the English version I make note of the fact that the restaurant has closed forever and will not reopen as was originally planned, however, in the www.wikide.info version the website fails to note this and gives only the info that was on the German version of Wikipedia's Cincinnati page. It doesn't seem that any info has been ripped off from the Engligsh version of Wikipedia.

I noted that the article was usable per the Wikitravel:article status guidelines. That's a good thing -- it means that the guide would be useful for travellers using it as their sole resource. Note that if you disagree you can change the status.

You are not solely responsible for the guide; we all work together to make Wikitravel guides world-class. So I'm averse to assigning homework for you to do. However, if you're looking for areas of improvement, I think the listings should be more in accordance with the Wikitravel:manual of style, that there should be a street map (see Wikitravel:Mapmaking Expion. It looks like someone moved the entire contents into a few templates: sv:Mall:Artiklarna (where the DotM is), sv:Mall:Projekten, sv:Mall:Valkomnar, sv:Mall:Lanklistan. I'm not Evan =), but I think yes, it's all up to you now — although the English guidelines should act as a base, and you should ask for feedback from other admins if you want to do something radically different (eg. the template-based listings (http://wikitravel.org/ja/%E3%83%89%E3%83%90%E3%82%A4) used on ja:). I agree that as the sole active admin (and, really, the only active user) you have a lot of discretion, and I advise you to plunge forward and do what seems right. Take a decision, state it, and see if anyone argues.

Illinois and state regions

Sigh... So the top-level page is reverted. I am not skillful enough with markup to avoid a circular redirect on the regions. Want to have a go at it?

The practice on region names in states isn't really uniform, whatever the convention is. I dug into some of the region names in other states (e.g. Central (New Mexico), which in fact you set up originally) and observe that there is inconsistency even within individual states (check out Ohio and its regions). Majority practice so far seems to be to create regions with the syntax "North(ern) (foo)" for state regions based on compass points, but descriptive regions (e.g. Chicagoland in Illinois) without the state name. This is as I had Illinois before today's revert, but whatever. I'm not sure this is a battle worth fighting, but in any event, someone else can fight it. -- Bill-on-the-Hill 12:57, 30 Dec 2005 (EST)

automatic templates

I was wondering if there was some possibility to have some "automatic expanding template". To explain it I make the reference to signatures: you write a certain code --~~~~ it will be changed into certain information.
Since most of our destinations have a pretty fixed layout, it would be very practical to write --country-- and see it replaced with ==understand== ==do== ==see== ==travel== ...
I think this would benefit to everyone: longtime users don't have to go copy paste for every new destination and new users will follow our layout better. Is this possible? --Twopeak 06:18, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)

Spam attack

The two attacks occured a few hours apart, and each attack inserted a different URL, so the second attack was immune to a spam filter. If we catch an attack, we can halt it midstream with the filter, but since the attack only lasted 10 minutes... Of course, even IP Blocking doesn't really work. We're just forcing them to get a zombie per , which isn't very hard. Any other ideas on how to handle this? In theory one could have a Tool that analyizes recent changes for a given suspect URL, figures out the set of users involved, and then rolls back those changes even when multiple users alter a single file... but that sounds like work. -- Colin 01:15, 7 Jan 2006 (EST)

Yeah, it seems like it was really hard. I didn't realize the URLs were rotating too. I guess a two-pronged approach (blocking IPs plus blocking URLs) is the best we can do. As Huttite pointed out, it's an error in our caching system. It writes HTML files to the file system, and when looking for http://wikitravel.org/en/User:Mark Apache will take either http://wikitravel.org/en/User:Mark..html or http://wikitravel.org/en/User:Mark.html. What's your opinion on uploading and retrieving images from Wikimeda Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) to spare bandwith on your server(s) and make the images available to others? Terms of use

Evan, I am working on the translation of pages in the Wikitravel:-namespace, but have found a sentence which for me is impossible to translate (just because of the web-technical lingo...so, I suppose I am ignorant in that sense). The sentence is to be found in Wikitravel:Terms of use and goes: For this reason, we ask that individuals or organizations wishing to re-distribute Wikitravel content do not serve images from Wikitravel for inclusion in their own pages, nor put Wikitravel pages into framesets. Now, I understand what it says, and I know how I would like to put it in swedish, but the very meaning of it is incomprehensible. This has mainly to do with the parts regarding "serve images" and "put into framesets", which means absolutely nothing to me... Can you shed some light over it....?
