See

  • Tate St Ives 1 (http://www.tate.org.uk/stives/), Porthmeor Beach, open March-October Mo-Su 10am- 5.30pm, November-February Tu-Su 10am-4.30pm, tel 01736 796226 (occasionally closed for re-hangings - telephone ahead to check status) - a far-flung outpost of the Tate Gallery, a long way from the better-known Tates Britain and Modern in London - a refreshing collection of international modern art

St Ives is a lovely Cornish fishing village that has grown into a town. In the centre is quaint fishing cottages, small alleys, craft and gift shops ..often original especially the paintings due to the influx earlier this century of artists from around Europe. The northern light allied to the beautiful sea has been an inpiration to artists and sculptures namely Dame Barbara Hepworth. This lead to The Tate building their gallery here............. IT IS A LOVELY BUILDING althought the juxtaposition with the council flats and houses may appear somewhat odd... THE ART sometimes IMHO does not always live up to the building BUT it is great that we see things here that are only available in London ( a dreadful place best avoided !!). I particulaly liked Antony Gormley's exhibition a couple of years back.

You can buy a joint ticket for the Tate and the Hempworth studio.... I recommend it about £8.50 leave time to do it justice....it is worth it.

The problem is PARKING in season as with a lot of Cornwall.....GET up early and the REDICULOUS price of parking in Cornwall.

If you go early drive right into town and down to the quay there is limited parking on the harbour wall (unless you can borrow a diabled certiciate for you car then park anywhere ;) ) There is a big car park on the southern hill but even that can be full by lunch walk down and get a bus back . Failing that on the way in to town is sign to the park and train ride not done it myself but looks fine.

Loads of Pasty shops but always avoid the steak and stilton pasties they may appear nice but as only cultured people eat them they often spend a couple of months on sale and can upset the gut ;)

The town beach facing north west sometimes has some good waves for us surfers ( although again parking even to drop of the sticks can be problematical ....sadly ) it is a lovely family beach too. There is a caravan/ camping /motor home site on the western fringes of the town (easy walking in AND lovely views too )

Please do come and enjoy a lovely holiday in Cornwall !
