Sihanoukville (Preah Seihanu), formerly Kompong Som and familiarly just Snookyville or even Snooky is a seaside town which offers Cambodia's probably best-known beaches.

By plane

There is a small airport a few miles out of town but there seems to be no regular flight services in the moment.

By car

• From Phnom Penh. National route 4 from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville is one of Cambodia's best. There is a regular bus service from Phnom Penh which takes about 4 hours at a cost of 3-4 US$. Busses leave at Phnom Penh Central Market.

• From the Thai border (Hat Lek/ Koh Kong). There is a road to the Thai border crossing which is often classified as a all season road. But the condition depends heavily on the weather so keep care especially in the rainy season. In December 2004 only the first part was tarred, while the most was gravel. There is a minibus service on this road (about 6-8 US$), but vans are often cramped and the trip is not the most comfortable. On the pro-side the trip offers in some parts a wonderful scenery.

By boat

There is a regular boat service to Koh Kong and (vice versa) from where it is easy to go on to the Thai border by minibus or moto. In the moment there is one boat daily from Sihanoukville. The price for the boat ticket is 12 US$.

By train

A train leaves Sihnaoukville to Phnom Penh every other day but the schedules don`t seem to be very reliable. And it`s a long and not very comfortable way to travel in Cambodia by train.

Get around

Motos are the way to get around Sihanouville as some of the beaches are a little bit out of town. Inform yourself about the fares and bargain ... Normally you should have to pay about 1 US$.

See

The reason to visit Sihanoukville are the beaches. Not as crowded as some of the Thai resorts they can be cramped on weekends and holidays. For diving go to one of the nearby islands. The town itself doesn't`t offer too much to see. The beaches are:

• Sokha Beach - overlooked by the new Sokha Beach Resort is together with ...

• Ochheuteal Beach - the most popular beach with many restaurants, bars and food vendors

• Independence Beach

• Victory Beach - south of the commercial port with many budget accommodation nearby

• Serendipity Beach - the northern part of Orcheuteal beach offers guesthouses right on the beach

• Otres Beach - south of Serendipity this is the less developed and crowded of the beaches

Other places of interest include

• Kampong Pier Nup Lok - the old fishing port 2 km north of the commercial port offers some nice views

There are several small shops in the town and a small market, too.

Along the beaches there are many food stalls and some restaurants, especially at Ochheuteal beach.

Sihanoukvilles accommodation ranges from basic guest house accommodation on the beach to several mid-range hotels. In 2004 the Sokha Beach Resort (tel. 34 935 999; fax. 34 935 888) opened it`s 4 star doors to the public for a 60 US$ plus and offers Sihanoukvilles best accommodation. There is no shortage of guesthouses so it is not necessary to book ahead.

Stay healthy

Medical services in Sihanoukville are very limited and basic. Medical service is offered by the International Peace Clinic (Ekareach Street) and the public hospital. In case of major trouble evacuation is necessary.

Internet

There are only a few Internet cafes within the town and some other at the beaches (one is behind the Crystal Hotel on Orcheuteal Beach). Charge is about 2 US$ per hour and Internet-telephone service is also available. Some of the mid-range hotels also offer Internet services at higher prices.

Post

The main Post Office is on Victory beach behind the Holiday Palace Casino another office opposite the market.

Embassies

The Vietnamese consulate on Ekareach Street issues visas within 1-2 days.

Get out

- Bokor Mountain: abandoned French hill station near Kompot which was a popular destination in the 1920s.

- Ream National Park: 18 km north of Sihanoukville it offers more than 20.000 hectares of coastal mangrove forest and an interesting fauna. Tours can be arranged everywhere in Sihanoukville.
