Understand

Until 2000 Sepang was just a flat stretch of palm plantations, but now it has tens of millions of visitors a year: some come to the Sepang F1 racing circuit, site of the Malaysian Grand Prix, but most just zip through Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Get in

By plane

All of Kuala Lumpur's jet flights, domestic and international, arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (http://www.klia.com.my/) (KLIA, IATA code KUL) in Sepang, a brand new airport built at a cost of some US $2.5 billion dollars and inaugurated in 1998. A striking concoction of glass and steel, it has been consistently ranked as one of the top airports in the world, even hosting a miniature rainforest in the middle of the terminal. All domestic flights depart from the main building, while some (but not all) international flights leave from the satellite building, connected by a shuttle train after immigration. By train

In a hurry? Train about to leave the airport? Just jump on board — you can buy your ticket on arrival at KL Sentral at the same price.

KLIA Ekspres (http://www.kliaekspres.com/) is a fast rail connection between the airport (Level 1) and Kuala Lumpur's KL Sentral station, taking 28 minutes for the nonstop trip. The base price is RM35 one way per person, no return discount. It operates from 5:00 AM to midnight, and runs every 15 minutes at peak, and every 20 minutes at off-peak hours (09:00-16:00, 22:00-00:00).

The half-hourly KLIA Transit service, running on the same tracks although the terminals are separate, also stops at 3 intermediate stations including Putrajaya. The trip takes 36 minutes and normally costs the same as the Ekspres, but the Transit also offers a "2-Adult Return" fare for RM 98. During the F1 races, there are shuttle buses from KLIA station directly to the race track, and combination tickets cost RM55/80 for 1/3 days.

On the way to the airport, consider checking in at the KL City Air Terminal (KLCAT) at KL Sentral, after which you can connect by train to the airport without your luggage to drag you down. Note that you must complete check-in at least 2 hours before your flight, and currently only Malaysia Airlines, Royal Brunei and Cathay Pacific flights are eligible.

The regular KTM Komuter line also passes through Sepang. The nearest station for the race track is Nilai (1 hour and RM4.50 to KL Sentral), from where there are bus services to the airport (30 min, RM2.50). This is the cheapest way of getting to the airport, but also the slowest — it'll take 2-3 hours with transfers included.

By taxi

A taxi ride from the airport to the city takes about 45 minutes in good traffic. All official taxis are fixed price, and you can buy a voucher at the Airport Taxi counters. Beware that there are several grades of taxi, and all too often, the sellers will sell a "premium" taxi ride (RM 92.10) without telling you there is a cheaper option of a "budget" cab (RM 67.10). Sometimes the premium is worth it, as the budget cabs are often more run down, smaller in size and have anemic air conditioning, but this still does not excuse the airport kiosks from tricking the tourists into the higher grade. Caveat emptor. After hours - be aware that there is an extra 50% surcharge for taking a taxicab after midnight from KLIA.

The official cabs are fairly pricy by Malaysian standards, and the touts lurking about in the airport arrival hall may actually be able to offer you a cheaper deal... and no avenue to complain if something goes wrong.

Also consider taking the KLIA Ekspres into KL Sentral and continuing by taxi or LRT from there — this is considerably cheaper for a single traveler and usually faster as it will shortcut any congestion on the way.

By bus

An express bus service runs from KLIA to Hentian Duta bus terminal in central Kuala Lumpur. The price is RM25 one-way, but the trip can take two hours on a bad day. Call 1-800-880-49 (in Malaysia) for details.

Get around

Public transport within Sepang is limited to the Sepang Omni-Bus, which connects KTM Komuter's Nilai station to the airport via the Sepang International Circuit race-track (RM 2, every 30 minutes).

Hotels and, when races are on, the F1 circuit run shuttle buses to ferry visitors to and from the airport.

See & Do

• Sepang International Circuit, 1 (http://www.malaysiangp.com.my/). One of the newest Formula 1 racing tracks in the world and the home of the yearly Malaysian Grand Prix, as well as other racing events. Tickets are quite affordable (at least by F1 standards) and start from RM 100 for a one-day C3 hillstand ticket — and go up to RM 1,750 for a 3-day "Diamond" upper mall ticket.

Eat

The best eating options are at the airport. Levels 2 and 4 (landside) offer food courts serving Malaysian fare at only slightly inflated prices.

• Eden Restaurant, KLIA Level 5 (Departures). A piece of Hong Kong dropped into the terminal, offers dim sum from carts (breakfast/lunch only) and Chinese seafood. Expensive with most mains over RM20, but worth a visit just for the humongous and tasty ais kacang (a cone with ice shavings with weird and wonderful toppings) at RM8.60.

Options outside the airport at limited.

• Downtown KLIA, Jalan KLIA 1 (opposite Concorde Hotel). Offers a range of eateries geared for locals.

Drink

Sleep

There are only a few places to stay in Sepang itself. If you have a bit of time to spare, you may want to consider zipping to the city on the KLIA Ekspres (28 min) and staying at the hotels in KL Sentral instead.

Mid-range

• Airside Transit Hotel, KLIA Satellite Building (near gate C3), tel. +60-3-87874848, 2 (http://www.klia.com.my/index.php?ch=22&pg=72&ac=49). 80-room transit hotel inside the airport, before immigration and thus excellent for transfers (but not anything else). Standard rooms for two from RM120 per 6 hours.

• Concorde Inn KLIA, tel. +60-3-87833118, 3 (http://www.concorde.net/sepang/). An uneasy cross between a resort and a boarding school, this three-star hotel is fine for a night's sleep but little more. Small pool and gym, free shuttle bus (5 min) to/from airport every 30 minutes and breakfast included. At RM150 and up, rooms are overpriced by Malaysian standards, but still just a third of what the Pan Pacific

This 80-room hotel has a snack bar, gym, spa and sauna a child care center and a business center. Non-guests can use the spa, shower and gym facilities.

Splurge

• Empress Hotel Sepang, 4 (http://www.empresshotelsepang.com/). Internet rates from RM260, including breakfast and hourly shuttle bus to airport (8 minutes).

• Pan Pacific KLIA, tel. +60-3-8787-3333, 5 (http://klairport.panpacific.com/). Directly connected to the airport building by a (longish) walkway. Rather steeply priced at US$120+ per night.
