Skye is linked to the mainland by a bridge (now free!) from Kyle of Lochalsh to KyleakinKyleakin, or via car ferries from ArmadaleArmadale to Mallaig, and from KylerheaKylerhea to Glenelg.

Trains stop just the other side of the sea channel from Skye. About 3 a day go on the beautiful route from Mallaig (ferry from ArmadaleArmadale) to Fort William and Glasgow and also from Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness.

By bus

Regular buses run between Portree and KyleakinKyleakin (then 1/2 hourly for 30p over the bridge to Kyle of Lochalsh), BroadfordBroadford, ArmadaleArmadale, UigUig and elsewhere. Three buses a day also run to Fort William, Inverness and Glasgow. There is an excellent Rapsons timetable 1 (http://www.rapsons.co.uk/areag.pdf) available for the buses on Skye.

By car

Withour a car you have to depend on excursion buses or your own feet because buses are few and far between. Major roads on Skye are still quite narrow and can get congested in high season, in low season driving in Skye is a delight.

There's a ferry from SconserSconser on Skye to InverarishInverarish on RaasayRaasay. Other ferries connect Uig with Harris and North-UistNorth-Uist and you can get from ArmadaleArmadale back to Mallaig.

  • The Lower Deck Restaurant (01478 613611) on the harbour in Portree specialises in simple, fresh seafood dishes, e.g. fish and chips £7.50.
  • Flodigarry Country House Hotel 4 (http://www.flodigarry.co.uk/food.htm), tel 01470 552203 - overpriced (at £36 a head) for three courses and coffee - not recommended. Apparently once very good, but now past it: food is unimaginative and overcooked. Poor value.

The Talisker Distillery, which produces a single malt whisky, is beside Loch HarportLoch Harport on the west coast of the island. Available for visits and tasting.

  • The Sligachan Hotel, the famous gathering place for climbers and walkers.
  • Most visitors to Skye seem to camp. There are numerous campsites dotted around the island, some in extremely picturesque settings.
