Irbid is a city in northern Jordan, some 88 km north of the capital Amman. The main industrial and administrative centre in the north of the kingdom, Irbid is home to the Yarmouk University and a good range of services, making it a great staging point for exploration further afield to GadaraGadara (Umm Qais), PellaPella and other nearby sites within the region. That said, Irbid also has a small number of attractions, mainly on the campus of the university.

Irbid

Understand

Archaeological evidences reveal that Irbid has been settled since the Bronze Age. During the Roman period, Irbid was known as Arbila. The city's ancient past now lies well hidden beneath modern roads and buildings.

See

  • the Museum of Jordanian Heritage 1 (http://www.yu.edu.jo/faculty/archaeology_anthropology/museum/Museum.htm), Yarmouk University campus- considered by many to be the finest archeological museum in the country, designed in partnership with the German government. Somewhat difficult to find however: driving from Amman, turn left at the roundabout by the stadium, then right after 500 m (around the stadium) and you will see an entrance about 500 m on the left with a museum sign. Check in with the officers at the gate and they will direct you to the museum (part of the University Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology)
  • Irbid Archaeological Museum, Department of Antiquities building, al-Ma'amun Street, open daily except Fri, 8 am - 2 pm
  • the Natural History Museum, open daily (except Tuesdays) 10 am - 5 pm winter, 10 am - 3 pm summer - worth a visit
