Get in

By plane

There are direct services about once per hour from Chubu International Airport to Gifu, or you can change trains in Nagoya.

By train

Gifu is a station on the Tokaido main line between Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo. There are frequent services to Nagoya, the nearest major Shinkansen station, only 25 minutes away by express.

Meitetsu Takehana Line connects Shin Hashima station (3 minutes walk from Gifu Hashima Shinkansen station) to Meitetsu Gifu in around 32 minutes.

The JR Takayama Line connects Gifu to Hida-Takayama via Gero Onsen.

By bus

There are scheduled buses (5 times/day) connecting Osaka Namba OCAT to Shin Gifu Bus Center. The trip takes less than 3 hours under normal traffic condition.

Fishing using Cormoran bird (Ukai) in Nagara River is a must see attraction in Summer nights. To see the performance, you get on a boat which is sailing side by side with the fishing boat. Dinner is included.

Traditional industry of Gifu City is umbrella and lantern made of hand-made paper.

Eat

El Paso near Meitetsu Gifu Station serves the best Mexican food. Prices are reasonable and the service is great. The waitress speaks a little english and the menu is in English and Japanese. The decor is a little eclectic with Buzz Light Year and Woody from Toy Story, The Tv with either sport or Country and Western music videos. Its a must place to eat.

Drink

• B's Cafe, Yanagase Shopping Mall. A cool bar frequented by young Japanese and a few foreigners. The management and bar staff are very friendly, it plays good music and it has 'funky environs'. It often holds launch parties for up and coming Japanese music. Drinks are reasonable, at ¥500, and on the first Thursday of every month there's no cover charge. Secondroom, just below offers a place to chill out with the owner, Bryan.

• The hotsprings of Gero Onsen and the hidden valleys of Takayama are within striking distance of Gifu, as is the historical battle site of Sekigahara.
