Galician is the Romance language most closely related to Portuguese (in fact, many people consider that Galician and Portuguese are the same language). It is spoken in Galicia, which is north of Portugal.

Sounds

Galician sounds are similar to Portuguese, but nasalization is not nearly as pervasive. The letter x, pronounced sh in both languages, is used in many Galician words where Portuguese uses j or g.

Vowels

a: like father
e: like set, about, or say.
i: like machine
o: between sort and book
u: like soup or book

Consonants

b: like 'b' in "bed"
c: like 's' in "supper", 'k' in "kid"
ç: like enforceable
d: like 'd' in "dog"
f: like 'ph' in "phone"
g: like garage
h: silent
j: like mirage
l: like 'l' in "love"
m: like mother
n: like nice
ñ: like canyon
p: like 'p' in "pig"
q: like unique. Qu is usually followed by e or i as a way to get the k sound.
r: rolled as in Spanish
s: like hiss or haze
t: like 't' in "top"
v: like 'v' in "victory"
x: like shoe
z: like 'z' in "haze"
