Galician is the Romance language most closely related to Portuguese (in fact, many people consider that Galician and Portuguese are the same language). It is spoken in Galicia, which is north of Portugal.

Sounds

Galician sounds are similar to Portuguese, but nasalization is not nearly as pervasive. The letter x, pronounced sh in both languages, is used in many Galician words where Portuguese uses j or g.
