Fukui (??) is the southernmost prefecture in the Hokuriku (??) part of the Chubu area of Honshu, Japan.

Cities

  • Fukui — seat of government for and situated in the Norther part of the Prefecture, it is still an important crossroads historically and also related to transportation in the Hokuriku area.
  • Ono — historic castle town
  • TsurugaTsuruga — a small harbor city on both the Hokuriku Toll Road and the Hokuriku Rail Line, it is home to one of the Kansai Electric Power's Nuclear Reactor power plants as well as the small village of Mihama where apparently Oda Nobunaga, who is famous for uniting almost all of Japan under one rule, spent a night after a rough battle and thanked the locals by having a garden placed in the backyard of the fief lord's house.

  • Echizen CoastEchizen Coast — Echizen is famous because of Lord Echizen who served under Shogun Yoshimune, and the rocky coastline is famous for delicious crab.
  • Eiheiji Temple — the head temple of the Soto Zen school of Buddhism. Established in 1244.
  • MihamaMihama — literally "Beautiful Beach", a small ancient fishing village near TsurugaTsuruga

Fukui means "lucky well". It is directly across the Sea of Japan from Korea. Its harbors are frequented by Russian and Korean cargo vessels. Fukui is well know for its beef grown in the WakasaWakasa area of Western Fukui Prefecture.

The dialect most spoken in Fukui now is the Kansai dialet, however several smaller dialects still persist from long ago. The MihamaMihama dialect is like many country dialects in Chubu. The northern Fukui dialect is a very distant cousin to modern standard Japanese spoken mainly by the elderly.
