Cryptosporidiosis is a water-bourne gastrointestinal disease that may be encountered in any country. The infectious vector is not affected by ordinary chlorine based water treatment systems encountered in most public water supplies and swimming pools.

It causes diarrhea, cramps and fever.

Acute symptoms may last 10 day but feces carry infection for weeks. Prevention by avoiding mouth coming into contact with infected water or fecal matter and maintaining scrupulous toilet and bathing hygiene after being infected to prevent reinfection of self or others. There is no cure.

As a public health measure, infected people must not bathe in public swimming pools. Contaminated pools need to be closed, drained and decontaminated if they become contaminated with Cryptosporidium.

In water catchment areas known or suspected to be infected with Cryptosporidium, ground or river water should be boiled rather than decontaminated with chlorine water treatment tablets. In treated water supply areas where contamination is suspected, tap water should be boiled before being used for drinking or dental hygiene.
