Cherokee County is the western-most county in North Carolina.

Depending upon whether you are travelling towards the east or the west, it can be considered to be the first or last county in the state.

Murphy is is the largest town in the county, is the county seat, and is the western-most town in the state. Andrews is located about 15 miles north-east of Murphy and is the gateway to the Nantahala Gorge and the Nantahala River.

Many people mistakenly believe that the Cherokee Indian Reservation (better described as the Qualla Boundary) is located in Cherokee County. Cherokee, NC and the Qualla Boundary are located in Swain County. There are other parts of the Boundary in Graham County and Cherokee County.

Cherokee County, however, is located about in the center of the traditional Cherokee territory and was named in their honor.
