The Chatham Islands are the eastern-most settled islands in New Zealand. The islands are in their own time zone and are 45 minutes ahead of New Zealand time, and the first place to see the new day, every day.

Understand

The Chatham Islands consist of two main islands and a number of rocky outcrops. The islands are volcanic in origin and have a unique and sensitive habitat that supports many rare and endangered species.

Getting There (and Back)

By Air

Although there are no passport requirements, travel is restricted. You can only board your flight if you have confirmed accommodation and transport on the islands. Flights from Christchurch are only every other day, so once you get there you must stay overnight.

By Boat

Either sail your own or be on the crew. There is only a cargo service to the islands.

Getting Around

If you do not have your own transport you will have to walk.

You should have sorted this out before you leave New Zealand. Either you are staying with friends or family, as their guest, or you have booked into the local hotel.
