Get in

Regular buses to Santander and hourly (1 hour) to San Sebastian EasyJet flies from London Stansted to Bilbao airport. You can also fly with Ryanair to Santander and, on June next year, Vitoria/Gasteiz, so it'll useful to know that the company linking Bilbao to Santander is the ALSA (http://www.alsa.es) (telf. 902422242, and in general you can get info about busses from Santander to Bilbao at http://www.santandereabus.com/. From Vitoria, take La Unión Alavesa buses. Moreover, the ALSA bus company connect the norh of the country with many cities in Spain maybe better that the rail companies RENFE and FEVE (check the websites to check this statement and for details).

Get around

Convenient, Norman Foster designed Metro (http://www.metrobilbao.net/), a Tram along the river to the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum (http://www.guggenheim-bilbao.es/) and Funicular up to a hill above the city.

One of the best 'tapas' bar in Bilbao is Aritz and it is quite out of the way (almost hidden really in a very small, one way street away from the main thoroughfares). Ask for it and you will be given directions. It is worth the walk since they have won the local 'tapas' (or 'pinchos' as they are called in the Basque area) contests for ages. For those who are not familiar, 'tapas' are little finger food that are eaten with drinks.

Drink

Don't miss Cafe Iruña. With its Arabesque motifs and antique mouldings it is a sight to behold. If you go at night, you can also get some nice shikabobs - the only ones you'll find in Bilbao.

Sleep

In Bilbao you can have a pleasant stay at the Abba Hoteles (http://www.abbaparquehotel.com), that here are particularly cheap compared the offered service. Indeed this is a chain of 4* hotels, and here you can find a quite rare 3* abba hotel. It's quite near the Bus Terminal, very near to the metro and quite near to the Guggheneim musem. It' in C/ Rodriguez Arias, 66 - 48013 Bilbao (Tlf. +34 944 41 31 00 - Fax. +34 944 42 21 97), notice the breakfast price, it's not so cheap.
