Beirut is the capital city of Lebanon with a population of approximately 2.1 million people in its metropolitan area. Although having something of a reputation as a city destroyed by civil war and terrorist interventions, Beirut is now trying to put the past behind it and recapture something of the glamor it possessed before 1975, when it was described as the "Paris of the Middle East".

Shopping

'Shopping' might seem an incongruous entry to any Wikitravel section for a country but Beirut well deserves it. Tagged synoynmously with shopping and conspicuous spending in the recent Luxury supplement of International Herald Tribune, shopping in Beirut ranges from Aishti- the Lebanese version of Barney's, the Virgin Mall, to traditional arts and crafts.

The hotel offers a free internet service, and is planning to start offering $15 day tours around Lebanon. Dorm beds are 9,000 LL ($6) and double rooms are 22,500 LL ($15) to 37,500 LL ($25). Splurge

  • The Phoenicia hotel, Minel el Hosn. 3 (http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/6c/1/en/hd/beyha) is a great hotel if you have the money and want to spend it. The location is great, walking distance to the downtown area and the waterfront boulevard.

Clubs and restaurants

Overseas Lebanese restaurants are a curiosity if the chic, glamorous interiors of F&B outlets in Beirut are anything to go by. An Asian fixation manifests itself in the all-glass, see and be seen sushi bar in Achrafieh, with Pravda and a host of chi-chi bars and cafes littered on Solidere. Clubbing insitituions include Bernard Khoury's BO-18, Zinc and Rai.
