Cities

• Kerikeri. This town is often called the Cradle Of The Nation, nestled among orchards and gardens, is a favourite destination.
• Opua.
• Paihia. The main city of the Bay of Islands, is a busy destination with many places to eat, drink and sleep.
• Russell.
• Waitangi. The city where the Treaty of Waitangi, between the Maori Chiefs and the British Crown, was first signed in 1840.

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds 1 (http://www.waitangi.net.nz/indexx.html) were gifted to the Nation by Lord and Lady Bledisloe in 1932, The Waitangi National Trust Treaty Grounds give a unique and fascinating insight into New Zealand's historic past. New Zealand's most significant document, The Treaty of Waitangi, was first signed here in 1840 between the Maori Chiefs and the British Crown, and became the basis for life in New Zealand as it is known today.

The Stone Store at Kerikeri, the oldest stone building in New Zealand, and adjacent Kemp House, are perennial subjects for tourists' cameras.

The area is home to a huge number of activities, from lounging on boats cruising around the various islands, to scenic helicopter or fixed wing flights.

Many of the activities are focused on or in the water. If you fancy a go at Kayaking then try Island Kayaks (http://www.acb.co.nz/kayaks/) based next to the Pipi Patch (http://www.acb.co.nz/pipi-patch/).

You can also take a catamaran trip around the bay and see the dolphins! They are right at the prow of the vessel and love to play. There is also the opportunity to swim with them.

• Ninety Mile Beach and Cape Reinga. Coach tours from Paihia usually last about 8-10 hours in duration, but if you are feeling flush you can jump into a Cessna for a 4 hour trip over to Kaitaia. Most of these tours also offer a chance to sandsurf at Tepaki Stream - an activity that involves climbing up the sand dunes and throwing yourself down them on a tea tray!
