Banaue is a town on the Cordillera mountain range in the north of the island of Luzon, in the Philippines.

• Rice terraces. These rice terraces are 3000 years old, and many are still in use today. They were created by the Ifugao (local native people). It was a massive engineering project. The terraces cover the sides of the valleys (probably 200 meters from floor to rim) for several miles.

Note that I had the benefit of a native guide (my spouse). There is only one bus (evidently) going to Banaue, and it leaves around 11pm from Manila, arriving in Banaue after sunrise. If you don't know where you are going it can be tricky to find the bus terminal. If possible you may want to arrange this leg of your journey through your travel agent before you leave home. I did not use the local hotels, but it is possible their staff could direct you also if you prefer to "play it by ear".

The Banaue rice terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
