Auroville is a small town 6 km north of Pondicherry. This town was a vision of The Mother from Sri Aurobindo Ashram at Pondichery as it's an international town. She envisioned a town where unity will be celebrated and all will have a spiritual vocation. The town has 1,700 people from over 35 different nationalities, from which about one third are Indians (more than 15% are French and 15% are German).
There are lots of interesting things to do and see in Auroville, the best way to browse them all is through the Auroville Handbook (100 Rs. can be bought in the visitors center and the bookshops around) or Auroville's website.
A map of the town can be bought in Pondichery at the Boutique de Auroville and at the visitors center in Auroville.
By Rickshaw (100 Rs.) or Taxi (140 Rs.) from Pondicherry. You can also take the bus to Chennai from Pondy, or the bus to Pondy from Chennai and get down at Auroville, there is a rickshaw waiting at the junction.
Best by motorbike, also possible by bicycle. Rickshaws and taxis are can be ordered for trips out of the town. If you have a guest card than you can use the community's bus to Pondicherry (for free). You can hire motorbikes at Auroville for 60-100 Rs. per day (depends on the model), and in some guesthouses you'll get one bicycle for free with your rent.
In Sanskrit Matrimandir means the Temple of the Mother. But Aurovillians will tell you that it's not a temple for The Mother.
To get a tour inside you have to get a pass in the visitors' center, everyday before 4 PM. The tour starts at 4, but you can come until 4:30 PM. On Saturdays and Sundays there are lots of Indian tourists that come to see the Matrimandir, by no way go to see it on these days (better not to see it at all, you'll be standing in line for 30-40 min and will be able to look at the inner chamber for about 20 sec). You are not allowed to bring bugs, cell phones and cameras into the the Matrimandir, so best to leave them in the car or guesthouse (a small purse is allowed)
If you want to mate inside, than you must take the tour first and than after it go to the Matrimandir Information Office to get a Mation Pass. If you have a guest card you can get a pass valid for all the days of your stay, otherwise you'll get a one day pass.
There are lot of activities in Auroville like Yoga, Tai-Chi, Watsu, different kinds of alternative healings and courses. The variety is wider during the visitors' season (December to March).
There are more than 450 beds in different guesthouses in Auroville. The best way is to go to the visitors' center in Auroville and browse through their book in which you can see the rooms and get details about them. Prices range from 75 Rs. per person per day to 900 Rs.
Every guest to Auroville has to pay a daily contribution of 60 Rs per day (30 for students), above the guesthouse rate.
